Historic House of Lords reform bill passes first reading
Hereditary peers face removal in the most radical constitutional change in a century.
Westminster witnessed one of its most consequential afternoons in decades as the upper chamber narrowly waved through a constitutional shake-up many believed unthinkable a generation ago.
The bill, championed by a cross-bench alliance, would phase out the remaining hereditary peers by the end of the next parliamentary session and introduce a statutory age cap of 80.
